June 11, 2018 – Isaiah 9:6
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6.
Who gave us these words announcing the stunning news of son to come? Isaiah. He lived from about 740 to 681 BC. (Before Christ Jesus was born.) Isaiah tells the story of the Israelites in the book of Isaiah and prophesies the birth of Jesus hundreds of years before Jesus was born.
Many babies were born through time, but none so special as this one. Each mother bearing a son is sure he will be special. No one writes the things Isaiah wrote about the coming of the baby Jesus. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Notice the Adjectives – Wonderful, Mighty, Mighty, Everlasting, and Prince.
The next verse continues the true story of Jesus. His government and its peace will never end. All through time governments, devised by man crumbled, came to an end.
Joseph came from the lineage of David the King. David was the man after God’s own heart. Isaiah recalls the name of David and how Jesus will rule, not for a space of time, but forever.
How can we know this will come to pass? The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies makes this be. David wrote – I love you, Lord;
You are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. Psalm 85:1-2
His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen! Isaiah 9:7.
