September 3, 2015 – 2 Kings 2:8-9

2Kings2-8-9Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it.  The river divided, ad the two of them went across on dry ground!  When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.”  And Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.”  2 Kings 2:8-9What was in the robe that caused the robe to part the water of the river?  What was in the staff that Moses carried that could part the Red Sea for the children of Israel so they could walk across?Yes, the power of Our Lord God!  God created the rivers and the seas and the things that were made by man — the robe and the staff.  Can you name one thing that we have that was not created by God?  Each of us are created by God.Elijah was a prophet who spoke to the people and gave them messages from God.  Now we have the Word of God and can read what God says.  His messages are not secret and do not change.  We can read them any time… to learn from God and the stories of people who lived for God.  Elijah had a man who learned from Elijah, for he loved God with all his heart, too.  Elijah taught Elisha about God.Elisha knew he would miss Elijah’s leading when he left.  Elijah knew that and asked what he could do for him before he left.  Elisha wanted a double dose of Elijah’s spirit and become your successor.  And Elijah was whisked away in a chariot of fire by a whirlwind!  Who do you teach about the love of Jesus?  Jesus wants us to share how much He loves each of us with some one.As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!” And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress. Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned to the bank of the Jordan River. He struck the water with Elijah’s cloak and cried out, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” Then the river divided, and Elisha went across.  2 Kings 2:11-14
