God For Every Age
History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. Ecclesiastes 1:9.
We struggle to live on the elusive ‘cutting edge’ in everything that does not matter in this world. We fight to stay within the confines of the ‘now times,’ fearing the expiration dates of medicine, food, appliances, and gadgets. Each generation searches for a new way to rebel against the prevailing authority, yet nothing new is in our grasp.
There is only One Being Who is always relevant and never out of date. There is no expiration date for our Creator, God Almighty and the teachings of His Son Jesus. God is the One who began time. At the end of time, He will send his Son Jesus to gather His Children home.
How mighty is God’s Power? My boys, while young, ‘played’ Superman, dressed in long underwear and capes of tea towels. One day I asked them, who is more powerful, God or Superman? We discussed this at length.
No man can tame or re-direct lightning, thunder, earthquakes, or a powerful hurricane. These noisy forces bring destruction on earth, reminding us of God’s Great Power and His Presence in this World. And we remember Him.
Christ Jesus walked on water, stilled the waves, and turned water into wine. He healed the blind and the lame. It is through God’s Power, in Christ Jesus, He touches our hearts to make us new creatures in Him. Jesus existed in the beginning with God. “God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” John 1:3-5.
“The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He came into the very world He created, but the world didn’t recognize Him.” John 1:9-10.
What is truly new? Each of us has the same beginning in this world. Psalm 139 reveals how God spends time forming each baby in the Mother’s womb before we are born. Verses 13-18-“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”
God knew us before we were born, Jesus came to this earth to make our hearts new again through His sacrifice on the cross. What is our response to His love and leading? How do we respond to His forgiveness and blessings?
In her poem, Anna Daisy gives us a pathway to follow to delight in the Lord. Children bow and offer songs of praise. We plead for God’s presence, pray, obey His commands, and we spread the joy of Jesus. In our weakness, we are made secure through His grace. (2 Corinthians 12:9) Each of us is His link to the next generation by the way we live for Him each day. Faith in Christ Jesus is heart-deep, and never skin-deep.
As I read this Psalm, I can hear Mom echoing the praise words – Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to every generation. Psalm 100:1-5.
God For Every Age
O, God, for every age, our spirits soar
When organs roll. We think of Sinai
Where thunder spoke and lightning’s mighty roar
Displayed your presence from a smoke-filled sky.
O, God, for every age, your children bow;
Please fill us with your holy presence now.
O, God, for every age and Christ, His Son.
Your children offer songs of praise to you:
Remember how you touched and blessed each one?
Reach down and touch each heart to make us new.
O, God, for every age, we humbly pray.
Bless your little children of today.
O, God, for every age, bend down your ear:
Let congregations follow your command
To spread the joy of Jesus far and near
And as we journey, give us your strength to stand.
O, God for every age, to you we sing,
Our Father, Son, and Spirit, be our King.
