September 17, 2015 – I Samuel 16:6-7

When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:6-7Samuel had to be taught to see as the Lord sees — the Lord measures people by the heart and not the way a person looks on the outside.  Samuel obeyed the Lord, just as we mind our parents.  It wasn’t just Samuel deciding what to do, but the Lord had  a purpose for Samuel.  It was a hard job to choose a King who rules.God chose David, the shepherd boy.  David is described as handsome with beautiful eyes.  That wasn’t the reason God chose him, God chose David because of his beautiful and obedient heart.  Samuel was ready to anoint the new King of Israel — he had olive oil.What happens next is that the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day on.  The same spirit of the Lord in Genesis 1:2 – The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.  The Holy Spirit, the Helper, the Counselor, the one who worked always with God from the beginning.Did Samuel stay and coach David to be all he could be?  No, his work was done.  It was in the Lord’s Hands from that time.  Samuel fulfilled his purpose, just as we do, when we listen to God’s words and messages to us.
