September 10, 2015 – I Samuel 17:45, 47

ISamuel17-45-47David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied…. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” I Samuel 17:45, 47David was a shepherd boy, the youngest son of Jesse.  His brothers went to fight in King Saul’s Army and David was sent with food for his brothers.  That is when David heard about Goliath of the Philistine Army.  This nine foot giant wore armor that weighed 125 pounds.  Every step Goliath took made it seem as if an earthquake followed him.  No one would fight Goliath.David took one look.  He didn’t see Goliath as frightening after he fought bears and lions to protect his father’s sheep.  He had a secret weapon – confidence and faith in God!  The Lord would fight this battle for David, just as He fought the bears and the lions.  Goliath laughed when David came to fight him.David carried his sling shot and chose one of his five smooth stones. His aim was steady, and the stone sank into the forehead of Goliath.  He stumbled and fell face down.David won the victory!  With one smooth stone and his faith in God, David won.  Just as we always win over evil when we trust God.  David always gave God the credit for winning.  He knew that without God he would fall just like Goliath! As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. I Samuel 17:48-50
