Reflections on “Be Still and Know That I Am God!” Psalm 46:10. May 14, 2024
“Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10.
From the time we are born, we want to know who we are. Our identity is important to ourselves and others.
Before we were created, God was the first “I Am!” In His Creation He has provided the high mountains, seas of many sizes, flowers of every shade and color. Animals all around the earth.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2.
God’s Words spoke all these things into being. By awesome deeds, you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas; the one who, by his strength, established the mountains being girded with might; Who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves,
the tumult of the peoples, so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy. Psalm 65:5-8.
Moses encountered God when He spoke from a burning bush and laid out what Moses was to do for the people of Israel to lead them from Egypt. God told Moses who He was. And He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Moses asked who am I to do this? Instead of telling Moses who he was, God replied, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” Moses asked God–“Who shall I say sent me?” And He said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am’ has sent me to you. God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel. ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.” Exodus 3:1-15.
When Jesus was born and grew up, John the Baptist baptized Him. As Jesus came out of the water, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
What do the ‘I Am’s’ of Jesus mean to us? “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24. What is most precious to us each day? Contentment, Truth, Steadfastness, Peace, Joy, Kindness! The Fruit of the Spirit returns to mind. Which is only possible through Jesus. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 22-24.
I am the bread of life–John 6:35, 48, 51. Bread is a basic staple food. While the Israelites were in the wilderness for 40 years, they were given food from Heaven–Manna for a time. Jesus declares Himself basically essential for eternal life.
I am the light of the world–John 8:12. This is the first thing God created. Genesis 1:3. Jesus He is the source of Spiritual Life. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11.
I am the door–John 10:7-9. So, Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
I am the good shepherd–I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:14-15. Jesus gave his life on the cross for us.
I am the resurrection and the life–John 11:25-26 Martha (sister to Lazarus) said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
I am the way and the truth and the life, John 14:6b. Way–Follow me. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6b. Truth – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. John 1:1-3. Life –Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. John 14: 19.
I am the true vine. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in Him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21.And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6.
Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15.
