& History
A
name of the Hebrew God, represented in Hebrew by the tetragrammaton (“four
letters”) יהוה (Yod
Heh Vav Heh), transliterated into Roman script Y H W H. Because it was
considered blasphemous to utter the name of God it was only written and never
spoken. This resulted in the original pronunciation being lost. The name may
have originally been derived from the old Semitic root הוה (hawah) meaning
“to be” or “to become”.

What
is in a name? There are those who proclaim that a name has an influence on what
the person may or may not become. The
meaning of a name has less impact for the choices made for the new born
child. Often a name is a ‘family’ name
and used generation after generation. An
aversion to a name often comes because of the way the person lives or behaves. In the beginning of the 19th
Century, a name became the bond of man – inferring trust and truth. Losing that name and reputation through
dishonesty was the worst thing that can happen to a person.

But
what of God’s name? In the 1980’s,
lining up my 6th grade students to walk down the hall to lunch, I
heard one student cry out in anger, “God!”
I quickly responded, “He is listening, what did you want to say to
Him?”

Who
is God? Why is God? Where is God?
When is God? What is God? There are many names for God. At one time God’ name was not uttered because
it was so sacred. When I was a child, I
heard my father pray to God, always with this salutation: Dear Heavenly Father. This taught me that God is in Heaven and the
Father of all. Through the stories from the Old Testament I learned more about
my Heavenly Father. I learned that God
is love, first of all. And after a lifetime,
I know that is a basic tenet to hold on to.
It is the reason for Creation of the world and us. I learned that God planned a way to save the
Creation of Man from the beginning through His One and Only Son, Jesus. I learned that God answers our prayers and
provides His sustenance for us. I
learned that when we choose to accept Jesus, we become a child of God. I learned that God answers our prayers in His
Way and in His Time. I learned I can trust
Him and that knowledge only comes from loving Him completely.

When
I think about God and consider Him, my heart cries out in joy and
thanksgiving. Now I know why. He is Light.
He created me – He knit my bones together in my Mother’s womb. He is present in the clouds and in the
wind. He strides across the
Heavens. He sees me in secret, He hears
my every word and every thought. He
witnesses my every action. He gives me
guidance and unconditional love and salvation through Jesus, His Son.

Where is another God like
you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special
people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing
love. Micah 7:18

are two….that the LORD told Moses:
Then the Lord told Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to
Pharaoh. When he feels the force of my strong hand, he will let the people go.
In fact, he will force them to leave his land!” And God
said to Moses, “I am Yahweh—‘the Lord.’ I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as
El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty’—but I did not reveal my name, Yahweh, to them.

Note: Yahweh – I AM – never had a beginning, no one
made God. He always was. The Alpha and Omega. God will never end, he cannot go out of
being. God is absolute reality – there
is no reality before him – He is all that is.
God is utterly independent, with no support to make him what He is. Everything that is not God depends totally on
God for breath and life. The universe
compared to God is nothing. God’s
language is truth, goodness, beauty and the standard of what is true. God does what He pleases and is constant –
the same yesterday, today and forever. God is worthy of all our worship and
praise more than the entire universe. . http://solidjoys.desiringgod.org/en/devotionals/10-things-yahweh-means
