Trees….

When I was a young girl, my mother bought me another song to learn, called Trees, by Joyce Kilmer. She often chose songs for me that glorified our Lord.

As I sang this song, and still the words ring true after 70 years.  I marveled at the ability of our Lord to create a tree.  The marvel of creation became more precious. Then I found Isiah 55;12 – “For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace. The mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”

Some of the lyrics of ‘Trees’ by Joyce Kilmer, 1886-1918, catch the glory of this part of God’s Creation.

“I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree… A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed, against the earth’s flowing breast.  A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray A tree that may in summer wear, a nest of robins in her hair. ” Only God can make a tree.

I became a tree watcher… watching with anticipation as the trees begin to leaf out in the Spring.  I listen to the birds, rejoicing and praising God for their song to sing. The squirrels climb a tree in joy and flash their tail in the wind.

A tree teaches us hospitality and its leaves whisper in the breeze, telling the secrets of God’s Joy.

Imagine if we pressed ever closer ad closer to God and raised our arms in prayer, unceasingly.  As the summer wanes, and the leaves of the trees change into glorious colors.  Colors from russet gold to brilliant yellow gold.

Then my heart longs to see the beauty of Heaven!  Home is where the Lord is!!!
