October 4, 2018 – Matthew 18:19-20
“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” Matthew 18:19-20.
The words of Jesus teach us His Way. Does Jesus change the subject between verses 19-20 and 21-22? The importance of forgiveness is underlined by understanding of prayer. We cannot forgive unless we pray with at least one other follower of Jesus. The promise is amazing. When two or more agree, and pray, God the Father will do it.
Who is this Jesus? “I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father. Then you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.” John 16:25-27.
There is power in the Name of Jesus. Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” John 14:6-7.
Why should we forgive others? “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15.
It takes a lot of love and a gentle spirit to love others and forgive – Forgiveness and a gentle spirit comes from believing in Jesus.
Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven! Matthew 18:21-22.
