May 1, 2018 – Ephesians 6:1-2

Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:” Ephesians 6:1-2.

This commandment is found twice in the Old Testament and  four times in the New Testament. When a commandment is repeated in God’s Word, it is important.

What does honor mean?  To show respect and worth to your parents by listening to them, obeying them, and caring for them.  Each person goes through phases in life.  First of all, we think only of what we want and need. Hugs, food, time to sleep, and companionship.

As grow up, we realize our parents are people with changing needs as they grow older, they need care, love, and companionship.  Honor your father and mother has a promise.  Things will go well for you AND you will have a long life on the earth.

Isaiah 46:4, tells us Who cares for the caretakers in the world!  I will be your God throughout your lifetime—until your hair is white with age.  I made you, and I will care for you.  I will carry you along and save you.

God loves his children, and cares for them, even when they are disobedient and rebellious, He forgives.  And he welcomes us Home… at the end of our lives.  Is it just our parents we should care for? “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink?’  And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.'” Matthew 25:37, 40.

“If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” Ephesians 6:3.
