August 31, 2021 – Reflections on “The Seed is the Word of God!”

And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:11-12.

Seeds. Remembering how my parents, who both grew up on a farm, loved Spring. They poured over the seed catalog to choose the seeds for the garden. The cellar was lined with jars of canned homegrown vegetables. I didn’t share their enthusiasm for dropping a seed in the ground and watching it grow while I grew up.

I planted gardens, but my heart wasn’t in it, until because of the lockdown, I couldn’t buy seeds, and being in my nineties, my energy is less. Then one day, after a visit with my Aunt Irene about planting tomatoes, I remembered the cherry sized tomatoes my daughter-in-law purchased for me. I dropped two halves of one tomato in the dirt, not expecting much. Then several plants sprouted. This year I tried the same thing with sweet pepper seeds. Amazing.

Each day, I checked their progress and finally transplanted several plants of each on my front porch flowerpots. Then they began bearing beautifully ripened tomatoes. But the peppers grew slowly. One day while watering, one small pepper broke off the plant. When I cut it open, I found it was filled with seeds. Usually, the larger seeds had room but not tiny this pepper. I wondered how all the seeds fitted. Then I wondered who put them in there. That led me to a deep fascination with seeds.

Somehow, reading the first chapter of Genesis, I skipped verses 11-12. I began searching for more scriptures containing a reference to seeds.  I remembered how a seed was a hindrance when eating watermelon or an apple. Seeds have a meaning.

In awe and wonder at the Providence of God. He doesn’t waste anything. Everything God created, He used to make man understand His teaching in the spiritual realm. From Daniel in the Lion’s Den to Noah building the Ark for the coming Flood and feeding the Israelites Manna, bread from Heaven, while they fled from the tyranny of the Egyptians, all recorded in the Old Testament.

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 2 Corinthians 9:10-11.

And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed, its own body. For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. I Corinthians 1:37-39.

What does it take to make a seed grow? First, it must be planted, watered, and have the right soil to grow. Then it will bear fruit and there is a harvest and rejoicing.

Had you thought that the five senses we are created with have a purpose? Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, and Touch are often ways that we learn about God.

So, faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17.

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.  For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 2 Corinthians 2:14-15

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life. I John 1:1.

What is the Kingdom of God? Is it real? He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown, it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” Matthew 13:31-33.

What pleases God? By faith, Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:5-6.

How can we learn about God and how to please Him? One generation shall commend your works to another and shall declare your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. Psalm 145:4-6.

Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Psalm 37:3-6.

Currently, we long for Peace from things that disturb our hearts, and we will find it in our Lord Jesus Christ. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7.

Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and His ears toward their cry. Psalm 34:14-15.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:17-18.

A tiny seed of kindness and love can create Joy, Hope, and Peace in those around us when we nurture it and let it grow in the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
