Peace
Peace is that elusive state of mind
that disappears at the hint of angst. As
I contemplate Peace, I wonder when peace began.
Is there a formula for peace? In
music, the 7th tone of the scales is a leading tone. The 7th tone leads to the
tonic, to resolve the melody or the chord structure to the ‘home sound’. A composition cannot end anywhere except on
‘home’ and sound complete in the journey of the song. We are a ‘home’ people.

We are a mobile people. As long as we have some ‘stuff’ to pack and
transport, we can be ‘home’ anywhere. Home is where the heart is, a familiar
quote. My home is where my family is, is another quote. When Dementia enters the scene, the desire to
go or be home is overwhelming, creating an unresolved peace of mind. Home is where we belong, and the desire to
belong somewhere is an innate desire.

What is peace? It is a tranquil sanctuary in my mind when
the body is at rest and calm. It begins
with the mind, it does not begin with material things we buy or hold, but with
what we think and what we believe. A chemical
‘peace’ or man-made ideas will wash away in a life-storm, leaving the wreckage
of unrest and an absence of peace.

We use the word ‘peace’ to describe
the cessation of turmoil or results of anger whether between two people, a
family, a group or between nations. War
is simply war and every war is a cessation of peace, peaceful behavior and God-trusting
attitude of the mind.

It is interesting that my memories
of the islands of peace in life began when
I young. As a child, beneath the maple
tree, sitting in the sandpile is location of peace that I remember first. Time stopped and sunshine warmed the earth. The contentment and peace pervade my
heart. In the seventh decade of my
years, I remember knowing that my sleep would not be interrupted and I could
rest in the arms of Jesus as I slept. Moments
of peace in my life are fleeting – and cherished. Now I find moments of peace when I worship God
and feel His Presence near me.

I remember the wonder I feel while reading
these verses that describe peace interwoven in a tapestry of love and joy and
trust and hope. God provides the
steadiness of peace, no matter what….in his Creation. No
matter what, the sun rises and sets.
No matter what, the seasons
pass before our eyes. No matter what,
seeds sprout and grow. No matter what, flowers bloom and birds
sing. No matter what, wind blows rainclouds overhead. No matter, crops are planted and
harvested. No matter, I believe in Him.

• ..do not be anxious about
anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts
and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4;6-7

• But the fruit of the Spirit
is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things
there is no law. Galatians 5;22-23

• But now in Christ Jesus you who
once were far off have been brought near by the blood of
Christ. For he himself is our
peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh
the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments
expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man
in place of the two, so making peace, Ephesians 2:13 – 15

• But the Helper, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all
things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I
give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts
be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:26-27

• Behold, the hour is coming,
indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home,
and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with
me. I have
said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the
world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome
the world.” John 16:32-33

• And above all these put
on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your
hearts, to which indeed you were
called in one body. And be thankful. Let the
word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all
wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in
your hearts to God. Colossians 3:14-16

Have you ever considered
the blessing of God’s peace in your life?
King David understood and knew the blessings of God and cherished the
blessings. King David knew the way to
God’s Peace – trust in God and recognizing God’s work in his life. David knew the genesis of His Peace is in
trusting God. Read this final verse in
view of David’s life. Then read again in
the view of your own life.

* Blessed is the one
who trusts in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside
to false gods. Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you
planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your
deeds, they would be too many to declare. Psalm 40:4-5
Walk with the Lord moment by moment
and go in His peace and courage and strength. He who stills
the waves of the sea calms our hearts with His Peace.
