February 5, 2019 – Job 38:19-20

“Where does light come from, and where does darkness go? Can you take each to its home? Do you know how to get there?” Job 38:19-20.

This is one of seventy questions God asked Job during a conversation.  Job endured the loss of his wealth and all his children.  His friends came to talk to him, and Job declared his innocence and would not repent.  His friends knew better.  Elihu talked with Job after his friends refused to talk to Job anymore.

Finally Job said, “If only someone would listen to me! Look, I will sign my name to my defense. Let the Almighty answer me.”  Elihu continues in Chapter 33 to teach Job wisdom.

Elihu then explained, “Do you think it is right for you to claim, ‘I am righteous before God’?  For you also ask, ‘What’s in it for me? What’s the use of living a righteous life?’ Job 35:2-3.  Elihu then said, “You are wrong in saying God does not know what is happening.”

The first verse of Job 38 begins, “Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind.”  God is the teacher and Job is the student.  If ever we are discouraged and ask why we should live a righteous life before God, this chapter tells us of the Almighty God who loves us. Blessed be the Lord!

 Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.   James 4:9-10.  True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life. Proverbs 22:4.

Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.” Job 38:3-4.
