June 27, 2017 – Matthew 11:28-29
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29
What is the verse of scripture that captures my attention? “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalm 46:10.
Being still and knowing God is the beginning of rest. Man has devised medicines to give us rest and calm our hearts for short periods of time. Man has invented many things to make noise – cars, electronic gadgets that pour out noise to drown out God’s voice. This noise covers many things, but it cannot not obliterate (stop) God’s call for us to come to Him.
Have you ever been so tired and weary that going one more step in this world is unthinkable? Bone weary, soul weary, heart weary, and we cry out for rest. Have you ever noticed how similar the words ‘rest’ and ‘restore’ are? Jesus promises rest for our souls. His yoke is easy to carry, when we are with Jesus, He bears the weight of our burden – our sins. Nothing weighs us down more than our unforgiven sins we carry each day when we leave Jesus out of our lives. “I can do it by myself” is a sure way to gather a heavy load to carry in life. Then we remember the verse – “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength…” Philippians 4:13. He has saved me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. And so I walk in the Lord’s presence as I live here on earth! Psalm 116:8-9.
For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. Matthew 11:30
