May 11, 2017 – Matthew 6:31-32

“Don’t worry and say, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ That’s what those people who don’t know God are always thinking about. Don’t worry, because your Father in heaven knows that you need all these things. Matthew 6:31-32

The phrase, “I worry….” is a common statement.  What does it say?  What does it say about how we live? I realized how often I used this phrase, and tried to use the word ‘concern’ yet, it has ‘worry’ lurking in the background.

I heard my Dad uttering the word worry, and it made him almost ill.  I had just learned, as a carefree college student, that with Jesus, there is no need to worry. Later as a young mother, I realized how easy the reality of ‘not enough’ for my family becomes first.

The reality of the world often pushes faith in God last in our list to capture our mind. Our needs for food and shelter comes first, then clothing.  When the ‘latest’ fashion, food, or decor for our home becomes first, our faith and trust is in the wrong place.  This is not who we are, when we look first to the kingdom of God and his righteousness.  This is God’s promise.

Jesus taught us to pray, Give us this day our daily bread…Matthew 6:11. We want more…until we realize Jesus is the ‘more’ we need…always and forever.  It changes us. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:10. Trusting Jesus is not a passing hide and seek game!  “These Things” includes love, joy, and peace.
