September 26, 2017 – Matthew 4:18-19
Matthew 4:18-19 – One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
The ultimate fish story! Jesus saw two brothers fishing for a living as He walked along the shore. He called out to them, interrupting their work. Peter and Andrew worked together to provide a living by fishing. What was their reaction?
Jesus’s words seem strange to us, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” Why? How? Where? When? What is it about Jesus that compelled Peter and Andrew to leave their nets at once and follow Him?
They didn’t hesitate, they didn’t prepare, pack clothing or a snack, or find a bottle of water, they left immediately with Jesus. They followed their heart! They didn’t stop to wonder what is in it for them, or wonder how it will all turn out.
We each have this same opportunity to hear about Jesus and follow Him. It is what we choose to do about Jesus that makes the difference in our lives. How often we de-cry living in the world with its traps of untruths, unkindness, and lack of love. Jesus loves us. He teaches love, He lives love. Without love, we are do not belong to Jesus. Jesus changes us to what we can be in Him.
The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” Luke 10:27-28.
For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. John 1:17-18.
Matthew 4:20 – And they left their nets at once and followed Him.
